Even though it is not the full version of the OCR programming solution from ABBYY and it is a more simple software, it still works great. The Fujitsu ScanSnap IX1500 has the ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap OCR optical character recognition software in the software bundle. And if those two are not enough, you can also buy an optional ethernet connection. The scanner can handle any document up to A4 size and it has great connectivity: A SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port and a Wireless connection. Epson recommends you scan up to 4000 sheets per day with this device which should cover most of your office needs. This image scanner is also quite fast, it can scan 35 pages per minute and it will hold up to 50 documents in its ADF tray.

If we want to create PDF documents that are used for document archiving we use the ABBYY server OCR though. The Acrobat app converts scanned documents to PDF only and its main advantage is the intelligent PDF compressor feature. We use this software especially for data capture but also to digitize books together with Adobe Acrobat and other OCR engines. After you run them through the scanner’s OCR software, you can convert them to searchable PDFs, editable Word documents, Microsoft Excel XLS, RTF, TXT and HTML file format. The software can output the scanned images in Bitmap, JPEG, TIFF and PNG. Classifieds for example tend to have smaller characters and the 600 dpi resolution will definitely make the difference there but in general, not as much. Obviously here, we are talking about characters that were printed with a standard font size. We tested this to find out if you really need more than 600 dpi and we found out there is a breaking point somewhere around the 400 dpi image resolution after which there is no more gain in character confidence and text recognition accuracy from high-quality images. For OCR, 600 dpi is more than enough for maximum character recognition accuracy. This document scanner uses a CCD sensor (Charge-Coupled Device) to create digital images at an optical resolution of 600 dpi. The software package that it comes with, includes the ABBYY FineReader Sprint. The Epson Ds-575 is one of our favorite OCR scanners. SuperSpeed USB 3.0, Wireless and Ethernet (optional)
